Thames Hospice Care
Thames Hospicecare is committed to providing excellent palliative care services for local patients with cancer and other life limiting illness and caring for their families.
Hospice based services include the out-patient unit where patients are offered a personal treatment plan to help manage their symptoms and individual needs. But for some patients a short stay in the 17 bedded in-patient unit in Windsor offers a better option. This allows the medical team to assess more complex symptoms and agree the treatment plan. Families and friends are always welcome and occasionally the family pet comes too!
A respite bed is also available and can be booked for up to two weeks, enabling carers to take a well earned break. The patient often enjoys a short break too knowing their carer is having a rest and will return fully refreshed.
The Patient and Family Services offer practical and emotional support to patients and their families both up to and following bereavement.
Given a choice, many of us would prefer to receive support in the comfort and security of our own home. THc offers that option through a team of THc Hospice at Home nurses, providing practical nursing care, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
At the Day Support Unit in Ascot, a planned programme of care with the aim of significantly enhancing each person’s ability to manage life at home is offered, helping the patient to regain confidence and independence.
A wide range of therapies are also available both at the Hospice and in the community helping to alleviate symptoms and improving each individual’s quality of life.
We are a local charity dependant upon the generosity of the local community to provide services that can help families like Jane’s, whose Mum was cared for at Thames Hospicecare:
“They could not make her better though how we wish that were possible, but they did give her back to us for two precious weeks. She was Mum again, funny, tiresome, loving and just that very special person we all loved.
We will never forget the kindness shown to Mum and to us. We are so grateful to everyone, who helps Thames Hospicecare to help families like ours. We will, thanks to them, live with happy and peaceful memories of someone very dear to us.”
Caring for the whole family, patient and carer is an important part of Hospicecare, which continues both up to, and following death.
Dame Cecily Saunders, founder of the modern Hospice movement said “how we dies remains in the memory of those that live on.’ The multidisciplinary teams at Thames Hospicecare take time to understand the needs of each person, respecting their individuality to provide the best possible specialist Hospice care either at the Hospice or in the person’s own home. Helping people to manage their illness and to live their life as fully as they are able.
For every £1 we spend, 75p has to be raised. It is only through the ongoing and enduring support from the people of East Berkshire and South Bucks for their local Hospice, that we are able to raise the £5 million needed each year to continue to provide these vital services.
All services and care is given free to patients and families and the government only provides 25% of our running costs. Therefore, none of these services could be provided without the support of the local community and the people who take part in our running programme by running for Thames Hospicecare.
Every penny counts.
