Thames Hospicecare (THc) is an independent charity, which was established in 2005 as a result of a merger with Thames Valley Hospice in Windsor and The Paul Bevan Cancer Foundation in Ascot. Both organisations started in the early 80’s in response to the local need for a Hospice. Initially providing a home nursing service, the Windsor Hospice was opened by the Queen in 1987, with Ascot following in 1997.Thames Hospicecare is governed by a board of Trustees and run on a day-to-day basis by the Chief Executive, Jacqueline Clarke and the Senior Management Team.

The Clinical Team will be shortly be led by a Palliative Care Consultant who will be responsible for delivering three main services, the In-Patient, Community and Out Patient Services. Although the majority of patients have cancer we are increasingly treating other life limiting illness such as Motor Neurone, MS, Parkinsons and renal failure.

We have 17 in-patient beds and out patient services available from THc Windsor. THc Ascot provides Community Services including THc’s Hospice at Home nursing service. We care for approximately 1000 patients and families a year and work closely with other health providers, e.g. District Nurses, GPs, Consultants and other Specialists Palliative Care teams who may be involved in a patient’s care.

THc is situated in Windsor and Ascot and serves the local surrounding communities of East Berkshire and South Bucks. We have 120 full and part time staff and 490 volunteers working at the Hospices in Windsor and Ascot and in the 16 THc Shops.

The map shows the areas where the majority of THc patients and supporters live. It records the number of patients over a five year period and is broken into the following: IPU (In-Patient Unit) at Windsor, DSU (Day Support Unit) in Ascot and H@H (Hospice at Home). It also shows the location of the THc shops and THc Fundraising Group, who all play a huge part in the day-to-day running of the Hospice. It costs £4m a year to run the Hospice. We receive approx 22% from the NHS towards our costs which means we rely heavily on the generosity of supporters, donors, and legators to help provide our services along with the efforts of our own income generation teams to raise the remaining 78%.We have a separate trading company which runs the THc shops based at Tinkers Lane, Dedworth and we are members of the Hospice Lottery Partnership. We have a Furniture Mart in Dedworth and 16 shops located in, Windsor, Uxbridge, Yiewsley, Crowthorne, Binfield. Woodley, Stainash, Sandhurst, North Ascot, Sunninghill, Maidenhead, Dedworth, Bracknell, Blackwater, Wokingham.

Every year it’s estimated that 400,000 people experience homelessness in the UK. Many thousands find themselves living in hostels and temporary accommodation. CRASH aims to provide a safe and welcoming environment from which homeless people can begin to rebuild the confidence and skills they need to integrate back into society, find employment, and move on to a home of their own.

CRASH is the construction industries charity for homeless people. We are a practical charity that focuses on improving the buildings used by homeless people. We do this in 3 ways;

*Awarding cash grants
*Providing on-site professional expertise
*Supplying free building materials

CRASH is unique. As an industry charity we encourage our Patron Partners to get directly involved in helping the projects who ask us for assistance. This help can be given through fundraising, time donated providing on-site professional expertise, or by the supply of free materials. Your help can make a difference as an individual or as a company.

Thanks to the continued support and generosity of companies within the construction and property sector, in the last year alone CRASH has been able to help over 80 projects.

The result of this generosity and practical sharing of materials and skills means that much needed renovation and development can be carried out to a far higher standard than would otherwise be possible, providing a safe and welcoming refuge for people in need.

If you’d like to find out more about CRASH and how you might be able to get directly involved in helping CRASH supported projects please visit our website at www.crash.org.uk.

Alternatively you can contact Nicola Baskerville, Projects Administrator on nbaskerville@crash.org.uk or call the CRASH office on 020 8742 0717.
Case study below:

Companions, volunteers & staff outside Emmaus Greenwich; a homelessness project supported by CRASH

Agency name: Emmaus Community
Project name: Emmaus Greenwich
Project type: Accommodation
Location: Greenwich, London

The project:
Emmaus Greenwich is an enterprising and practical project which gives homeless people the opportunity to get off the streets and into a structured life within the Emmaus community.
Emmaus companions are encouraged to utilise the skills they have and to develop new ones during their stay. Some look after the home-making, while others work on restoring and decorating furniture & craft items in the workshops, or help run the shop. Refurbished items are sold at affordable prices through the Emmaus shop which enables the community to be self-sustaining. On joining the Emmaus community all Companions make a commitment to stop claiming benefits and work to support the community that is helping them.

Reason for development:
Emmaus Greenwich applied to CRASH for help with the development of their shop. If the community can increase the amount of furniture that they refurbish and sell on through their second-hand shop, they will be able to generate more much-needed income. They therefore want to construct a single story extension of the shop.

How CRASH intends to help:
The total cost of this development is £100,000, 50% of which is being raised by Emmaus Greenwich; the other half will be provided by CRASH. CRASH will also give added value to the project through the provision of professional expertise and by supplying materials.
